STARS of the stage and screen were among the mourners who turned out to pay their respects as Brenda Fricker was laid to rest today.
The proud Dubliner, who was the first Irish actress to win an Oscar, passed away in July at the age of 81 following a period of ill-health.

She was laid to rest in her home city today, with crowds of people flocking to pay their respects at the ceremony held at St Catherine’s Church in Meath Street.
Among them was film director Jim Sheridan, whom Fricker worked with on the film My Left Foot.

Fricker won critical acclaim for her portrayal of Bridget Brown, the mother of Christy Brown, in the film.
Starring alongside Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work.

Actor Brendan Gleeson was also among the mourners today. Fricker starred alongside Gleeson in the 1991 film The Field.
She is also widely remembered for her role as the Pigeon Woman in Home Alone 2 and her work on the BBC drama series Casualty in the 1980s.
A private burial was held today following the funeral Mass.
